What is consolidating folders?

When I delete an email a message come up and asks do you want to consolidate your folders. I don't know how this works and where they go and how they are retrieved. Also, how can the consolidation be controlled. Thank you for your help with this.

I have never seen the word "consolidate" in Thunderbird. Are you using a non-English version?

Maybe it is compacting?
