Which Java version did you try to install (Java 6 or Java 7)?

The rpm version or the tar.gz (or bin) version for Linux?

If the rpm doesn't work then you can try the tar.gz archive and copy the files to a java folder in /usr/local
You will have to create a symlink to the Java plugin (lib/i386/libnpjp2.so) in a location that Firefox scans for plugins.
