"Change browsers"? I'm not sure how that relates to you. You have mentioned two browser-based email services, and there's nothing to stop you working these through any modern browser.

You can set either or both of these up in Thunderbird (use IMAP if given a choice) and the messages will just appear in Thunderbird.

Contacts are harder. You'll need to export these, preferably to CSV file or vCard format, and import these into Thunderbird's Address Book.

But why are you considering Thunderbird? What do you hope to achieve by using it?
