Left click to open links on Thunderbird

lonewolf

Hey Guys,

My Left click to open links from my emails has stopped working. I have to right click and select Open Link. I have tried everything, tried going through some of the config editor options i saw people mention for this issue and its all set to True already. There is no data besides PDF under the settings / attachments section. So cant change anything there. I tried a new profile, no go. I did a full uninstall and delete profile and started again, still same issue.

Left click to open links for everything else on my computer like firefox etc. Just cant open links through thunderbird. It used to work, it seems to have stopped around the same time as the latest update but i cant be sure about that. Only stopped working the last few days,

Damn it, I seem to have fixed it with a setting in the Privacy section. Cant believe i have spent several hours on this issue and it was that easy.

Which setting did you change?

In Settings / Privacy. Mail Content. Allow remote content in messages was ticked off after the update i presume and thats why it stopped working. Once i ticked it on, then i was able to left click on links and it will auto load on my default browser. Strange but it fixed it.

I have NEVER allowed that setting to be turned on - it's a security risk. This article goes into detail why;

https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/remote-content-in-messages

That setting is turned off by default when the program is installed, for good reason.

There's no good reason why that setting should affect clickable links, though of course there could be some unusual or system-specific interaction. I suggest that, for privacy reasons, you try turning it off again and see if your links problem comes back, and if not, leave the switch turned off.

Hmm You are right, I can switch it off now and it still works. But why was it that was the only setting i changed to get it to work in the first place? Strange. So now I have no idea why it stopped working besides the fact that it was after i updated it. And somehow its now fixed by that setting even though i can make that go back to default .

Sometimes just "tickling" a misbehaving setting by flipping it is enough to get it working again. It's one of those unexplainable computer things, not necessarily just Thunderbird.
