Suddenly, cache is not emptying when 'Clear data' is used. Also suddenly, 'Delete cookies and site data when Firefox is closed' preference is faded out/ unavailable. 'Never remember history' is checked as usual but cache does not clear when Firefox is closed. All cookies and data cleared without problem 2 days ago. This has never happened before.

Start Firefox in Safe Mode {web link}

A small dialog should appear. Click Start In Safe Mode (not Refresh). Is the problem still there?

In (permanent) PB mode the disk cache and other storage in the profile folder aren't used. All session data is kept in memory and purged automatically when you close Firefox, so there is no need to use "Clear history when Firefox closes" and it isn't working as well. What you see for the disk cache can only be cleared if you run Firefox in regular mode, so you need to start Firefox normally if you want to clear such data or clear involved files/folders in the profile folder yourself.
