Installed it, apparently succeeded, but got no confirmation e-mail and icon did not appear on my desktop.

Hi, installed what ? Firefox, a Extension, something else ? If just installed it why would it have sites you logged into. ?

Clear and concise and expand starting at the beginning please...

If you installed Firefox please uninstall it, Delete the Mozilla Firefox Folders in C:\Program Files , C:\Program Files(x86) & C:\ProgramData if they remain. Reinstall with Current Release Firefox 61.0.2 with a Full Version Installer
