Why would Firefox suddenly stop saving or automatically filling in the rest of a web address?

more options

Firefox suddenly stopped automatically completing addresses in the awesome bar. I have made no changes or done nothing differently. When I start typing a web address the drop-down list of previously visited sites only appears part of the time. Web sites that I visited many times are no longer listed and do not complete automatically. It no longer seems to add new sites to the list.

This just started happening suddenly. I made no changes to the settings or anything else.
