I keep getting this unable to update box. Says I don't have system permissions on my own computer. I tried downloading the latest update manually, I have file in my downloads folder, firefox-51.0.1.tar.bz2, but I don't know what to do with it. I click on it and it just shows me the files and folders inside.

Please explain in detail what to do to cause this "Unable to Update" dialog box go away.

Yes, I looked at the support pages for updating for Linux. Too complicated. It doesn't tell me exactly step by step what to do.

Please help me by telling me step by step what to do. E.g. click on terminal window, type xxxx, press enter ...

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you Joe

Where did you install your current Firefox 50 version?

I usually install Firefox in a folder in "\usr\local\mozilla" as I also have developer and beta versions installed, but you also create a firefox folder in your home directory (~/firefox) and extract the files to that folder.

This means that Firefox is installed at a location that requires root permissions. You will have to start Firefox as a root user (e.g. sudo) to be able to update Firefox or install Firefox in your Home directory if you are the only user.

If you can't update then simply download and install the full version and extract its content to the Firefox installation folder (best is to first clear this folder).

Thank you for the very fast answer. I know how to copy the contents of firefox15.0.1.tar.bz archive. But exactly to what folder would I copy it into? Thank you.

I prefer to put my Firefox and SeaMonkey builds in their own folders in Home directory to keep things simple on read/write permissions.

The key thing is you need to make sure the Firefox folder have read/write permissions for the User or you will need to be SU to do updates.

You can make a desktop or launcher shortcut to the firefox script file in the firefox folder.

Note if you were to use Firefox from your Linux distro package manager then Mozilla does not update those builds as it is third-party.

Thank you again. I found a creative way to upgrage firefox. I removed then re-installed Firefox from the Linux Mint's Welcome Screen -> Software Manager.
