Firefox repeatedly CTD on many websites with no add-ons installed

On many of the websites, particularly those with pictures, Firefox crashes repeatedly. I had not yet installed any add-ons, since Java came preloaded. I have tried installing two in the meantime to block ads and trackers. They have had little effect, and possibly made it worse, or it just got worse on its own. If I manage to switch to reader view, which eliminates all pictures and videos, the browser seems to stabilize and stop crashing.
