I want to be able to SAVE the bookmarks after they have been sorted. After the bookmarks have been sorted under the view command, and I exit the view command, the actual bookmark dropdown on the toolmenu remains unsorted. This is extremely annoying - I don't want to have to open several commands to be able to find a bookmark quickly

Using the view menu does not sort the bookmarks, it is just for displaying them in a different order. For details of how to sort them see http://kb.mozillazine.org/Sorting_and_rearranging_bookmarks_-_Firefox

The SortPlaces add-on may be of interest to you, it gives greater control over sorting bookmarks.
