When I click a link which came from a trusted email sender I do, in fact, go to my Firefox browser. However, it goes to an earlier set of bookmarks and layout. How do I change it to go to my current set and layout?

Is your current Firefox profile the default profile? In Firefox, Help/Troubleshooting, about:profiles, to set the default profile.
