Messages containing folder links don't open properly

When I have a message containing a folder link, e.g. "X:\Staff\Charmaine\2016\Benefits Checks", and I double-click it, Thunderbird says, "This link needs to be opened with an application." When I choose explorer.exe, it does launch explorer, but open my local "My Documents" folder, not the path in the link. Tools > Option > Attachments, show "Content Type: x" (presumably from the drive letter?) associated with "Windows Explorer". However, it NEVER opens the folder in the link, always "My Documents".

Is there a fix?
