Please tell me how to stop this. I have spellcheck enabled and a English (UK) dictionary selected. This problem has just started. My computer is old now and I'm running Windows 10. I had to do a 'hard shut-down' recently when my computer was unresponsive - might this have caused the problem? This underlining is only happening in Thunderbird, not in Word for example. I would be grateful for a simple solution as I'm not very computer-savvy.

Ciao, ti comunico che in mattinata come sempre all'apertura della posta come di incanto thunderbird era tutto in italiano, probabilmente ha risposto a scoppio ritardato all'azione lanciata in precedenza per scaricare e installare il link ricevuto dal tuo collega per ottenere la nuova versione che all'atto non ha recepito ma ora è perfetta cioè in italiano come la preferivo, riguardo il passaggio di cambiare lingua che mi suggerisci l'avevo provato senza successo. Ciao, premesso che non sono tanto pratico come verificherai dalle mie precedenti discussioni con tuoi colleghi, ho installato l'ultima versione di Thunderbird su importanti segnalazioni di criticità dell'antivirus Kaspersky che suggeriva di installare l'ultima versione pertanto ho lanciato richiesta di aiuto al forum della comunità che mi ha inviato il link tradotto in italiano avendo (x64 it) ho scaricato e installato ma senza successo perchè è rimasto sempre in inglese, forse non avendo tanta conoscenza di passaggi da eseguire non so. Spero che comprenderai la questione auspicando un tuo cortese aiuto ha risolvere il problema cmq grazie e saluti. Renato

Dear Support,

Around 12-14 August 2026, there was an update pushed for the Thunderbird client esr (extended support release). My current version is 153.1.0esr. After the update, some of my new e-mail received question mark characters '?' instead of content in Traditional Chinese.

I could view the affected e-mail on the e-mail server, but not on the recently updated Thunderbord client. The issue only exists after the recently update of thunderbird esr in August 2026.

Not all e-mails in Traditional Chinese were affected, just some of them.

Is there any change for the language encoding recently? What should I do to resolve the issue?

Hello everyone.

Lately a get my emails from greek senders like in the screenshot, not everyone, but most of them. I tried many things like, changing mime variable from false to true, removing addons, repair folder, repair font to no avail. I also disabled antivirus. The questios marks are also in the "ctrl+U" screen and the fonts looks utf-8 as normal in the header. They look normal online or the yahoo mail app in iOS. Anyong knows how to fix this?

I am migrating from thunderbird flatpak to thunderbird linux repository and the British English dictionary, which is included in the flatpak version, isn't included in the linux repo version.

I can see there are two different British English dictionaries in the "dictionary and language packs" page.

Please can anyone help and tell me which British English dictionary is included in the flatpak thunderbird? I would like to use it with the linux repo version, I like that dictionary.

It seems that US English is the default dictionary on Thunderbird. I'd like to uninstall it so that the Canadian English dictionary is the default one.

How do I rid myself of the US dictionary?

Hi All,

I was writing an email, and completed a spell check where I had written "inital" instead of initial. I clicked on replace with Initial as I have done with many errors in the past, but this time the change wasnt made to the text before the email was sent.

Now, whenever I write inital as a test, it is no longer underlined in red and the spell checker is happy with it.

I have checked the personal dictionary list to see if I added it by mistake but its empty. Also, If I choose another english dictionary i.e. English (United Kingdom) it is once again recognised as a typo.

Is there a way for me to remove and reinstall the Australian English dictionary, or is there an easier solution I can try?

I am a relative newcomer to Linux but can follow terminal directions if provided. Thanks for your help!

hello, i had a friend and his father needed urgently to migrate his thunderbird with 1 email to a new computer but he wasnt able to setup the emailaccount in a new german client. i helped and the problem was that the setup asks for the password but it meant the password from the emailprovider to allow thirdpartyapps access. please consider to improve the german setup wizard by adding a new textline to clearify. best regards

I recently move to a new Windows 11 computer and seemed to have done the move correctly, given that everything showed up, and I could send and receive emails.

For no apparent reason, however, the keyboard suddenly began mistyping in the message portion of the email message frame but not in the header ("To," "Subject," etc.) areas. For example, when pressed, z appears as {, y as z, h as i (but followed by a space), 6 as 7, d as e, and so on.

I tried various fixes, which didn't work, such as pressing windows key + space bar simultaneously, or left alt + space bar simultaneously, to no effect at all: nothing appeared, nothing happened. I looked in "Settings" to see if there were any other keyboards listed, which there weren't.

This is happening nowhere else, in any other application, but here, and I've never seen anything like it before. Also, I've used Thunderbird for quite awhile and never saw nor heard of anything like this.

Hello, I am on the latest version of Thunderbird on a Windows 11 computer. Previously with a Windows 10 computer I had no problem spell checking e-mails in French. However with a new Windows 11 laptop the French dictionary although installed shows as not loaded on the dashboard and unsurprisingly does not function. I have restarted both Thunderbird and the laptop. No result. Any advice most welcome.

1. I downloaded the german language pack for correcting my writings. To use ist I have to go to options and writing correction and make a makr there. Works perfect until the next email than I have to make it again, no way to store it ??? I always jumps back to english

When typing messages with incorrect word, Thunderbird advises the error, but does not offer alternatives. This worked on my old PC, but not on newly installed version on new PC.
