Whenever I go to pages where the Adobe Flash Player "plugin-container.exe" runs "FlashPlayerPlugin_xx_x_xxx_xx.exe" (x's being version number), it causes hundreds of empty "fap" files to save to my Firefox and C:\Windows\Temp folders. How can I prevent this?

Thanks!

BINGO!!!

The "Flash Protected Mode" link was exactly what I was looking for.

Check your Task Manager and see if you have two instances of Flash Player Plugin running. If you do, go into your Macromed Flash folder. In Win Vista or 7, 64 bit OS, it should be here:

C:\Windows\SysWOW64\Macromed\Flash

Open the mms.cfg file with Notepad and add this line:

ProtectedMode=0

Save the file and the problem is solved. You shouldn't see two instances of Flash Player and you won't get the "fap" files anymore.

MANY THANKS!

There was a similar thread at MozillaZine awhile back, where a Windows 7 Firefox user said, thousands of these 0 kb tmp files are created they look like this = FAP64FB.tmp, FAP7AFE.tmp etc...they always start with FAP...

As a first step, you could try uninstalling Flash - see http://kb.mozillazine.org/Flash#Uninstalling_Flash - and then reinstall it - see http://kb.mozillazine.org/Flash#Installing_or_updating_Flash

If uninstalling and reinstalling the Flash Player doesn't help then you could try disabling protected mode in Flash, which was suggested in the MozillaZine thread, to see if that helps at all. Instructions to do that and other troubleshooting steps are given here:

Hey, that's great! Thanks for posting back that disabling protected mode in Flash solved the problem.

Which security software (anti-virus) do you have?

It is possible that these are temp files created by Flash to communicate between the two processes or for other purposes and that security software is preventing to clean them up properly.

I don't believe it has anything to do with an antivirus program. From the other thread, it appears to be an issue with the how the flash player runs in Vista and Win 7. Just in case, however, I use the free antivirus "Avira."
