Why is Firefox 6.0.2 is using 3,000,000 kbytes of memory?

Before Firefox 6, Firefox would never get even close to using 1 GB of memory. But now it is steady at around 2.8 to 3 GB. Is this a bug or is Firefox now just normally use this much memory?

Start Firefox in Use Troubleshoot Mode in Firefox to check if one of the extensions is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox (Tools) > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).
