When I try to respond to a Craigslist ad, here's what I get:

Not sure if I have the exact same issue, but... when I try to post an item for sale to CL the site now ask to" verify" my phone number, I think site use to utilize E~mail address. I am having a prob setting my default E~ (hotmail) here.

Firefox doesn't use POP3 or SMTP protocols. Those protocols are used by email applications, not by web browsers.
If you are using Outlook Express for email, is that set as the mailto application in Tools > Options > Applications?
