Latest TB update on Win11 and still every incoming email is marked as read when I have not opened it

Within the last 6 weeks I migrated to Win11. I migrated my apps that would work and Thunderbird also. Got a recent update of TB. Finally MOSTLY disabled the bloody awful thread thing in TB (seems to be folder specific??!).

But ever since running on Win 11, I cannot stop TB from marking my messages as read even if I have never opened them. Even If I never use another device to connect with email. I try things and sometimes it works for like a day and then poof! : any email that comes in is read as per TB.

It is killing me. I run my biz on email and if it is unread I give it low priority. But turns out it is marked read without any action from me. I get a LOT of emails.

Really! I do no want to migrate to another email program.

I am fluent with regedit and can hack a .ini file. Point me in the right direction please.

help!

Are you using the message pane? Then just clicking a message in the thread pane, and showing it in the message pane would open the message, and hence marking it 'as read'.

The message pane can be toggled on/off by pressing F8.

No I am not using the massage pane. Never have. And I toggle on then off per your suggestion to be sure it was off.

Unchecking the Automatically make messages as read has not been working.

So I re-checked it but with the display time for over 5 minutes before marked as read. Seemed to work for a while but nope. Still unopened emails are marked as read.

Just noticed that if a message is received in the inbox when I have already pointed the Thunderbird GUI to view a different folder, then when I open the Inbox folder again, the message is already marked as 'read' by TB. But if I have the inbox open and in view in TB, then the new messages are left alone and continue to be unread.

I have a lot of filters. Like 40 that pop emails into various folders. Have people noticed that a lot of TB filters cause issues?

In fact same phenomenon as above when "Automatically mark message as read" is NOT checked.

I just relied to this under another topic. Here it is https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1558670

I really hate wasting my time on duplication. If I had just noticed you had hijacked someone else's topic I would have not replied, oh well. SO I might be wrong about the bitdefender thing. That is what you get when you don't play it the way you are asked to.
