I changed my Google account password just today. I have used Thunderbird on PC for Gmail without issues for years. I went into Thunderbird Saved Passwords and changed the appropriate line to the new Gmail password. I restarted Thunderbird and tried to send a test e-mail. I kept getting "Login to account Google Mail failed" with a box of 3 options, Retry, Enter New Password or Cancel. When I click on either Retry or Enter New Password, it doesn't give me a chance to enter a password and goes immediately into the same "Login to account Google Mail failed" box with the 3 options. I searched and read the support and one of the option is to remove the line from Saved Passwords and re-create it. I did that and tried to send another test e-mail. Now I'm still not getting a chance to enter a new password. I keep getting the box with the 3 options which doesn't allow me to enter a new password. There isn't a new entry in the Saved Passwords.

Strange thing is Thunderbird is receiving new e-mails fine. I'm just not able to send.

Thanks.

All those settings are what I already have.

I did some more checks and tests. I noticed the error message had an extra m in ...@gmail.comm. I found this in the Outgoing Server email name (which I swear I never touched this field today during password change). I removed the extra m and I'm now able to send out emails. Never actually asked me for the new password.

Thanks for your help.

You can't enter the gmail account password in Settings. Change the authentication to OAuth2, for incoming and outgoing, remove all entries from Saved Passwords, accept cookies in TB (not browser) Settings, restart TB, enter the account password in the OAuth window, which will store an oauth:// token in Saved Passwords.

Thanks for the reply. I still cannot send. I'm using TB 128.11.1esr (64-bit). I was already using OAuth2 and always using imap.gmail.com. There isn't option to set Incoming Outgoing separately. I followed your suggestion to remove those two other OAuth entries in Password list relating to Gmail access. I restarted TB and it opened the Google access window which I OKed TB to read and access my mail. The app went back into TB app so it appears I'm still able to download emails. I then did a test to send new e-mail. it opened the Google access window (again) which I OKed TB to read and access my mail. Then it gave me that same window of those 3 options "Retry, Enter New Password or Cancel". ....until I eventually get the time out window: Sending of the message failed. Unable to authenticate to Outgoing server (SMTP) smtp.gmail.com. Please check the password and verify the 'Authentication method' in 'Account Settings | Outgoing server (SMTP)'.

I'm using IMAP so not sure why the error message is saying SMTP. I now have two OAuth entries in Passwords. I can receive e-mail but cannot send.

Thanks.

Open Account Settings, then Outgoing Server (SMTP) at the bottom of the left pane. Select the gmail smtp, Edit..., use smtp.gmail.com, 465, SSL/TLS, OAuth2, email address. The outgoing server uses the same oauth:// token as the incoming, as long as you have the account sending on the correct smtp (select the account in the left pane of Account Settings, set the server in the Outgoing Server (SMTP) dropdown in the right pane).
