I have an Arch Linux installation with Plasma desktop. Software is always kept up-to-date. Sometime recently, Mozilla apps, Firefox nor Thunderbird, will no longer print, neither to pdf nor to network printer. These always worked before. Now, if even "print preview" is invoked, the dialog opens as a blank sub window with only the word "Print" in upper right, and at left center is "Preparing Preview with rotating time delay wheel, which never resolves. All other apps, including other browsers and mail handlers, will print without issue. I've tried the obvious checks with no success. Where could be the problem? Is there a helper app shared by Firefox and Thunderbird that could be the issue? The only potential remedy I have not yet tried is complete removal of both Firefox and Thunderbird, as that would cause re-configuration issues for both. It's necessary to press <ESC> to terminate the print window when it fails to respond. Screenshot attached...

It works for me. see screenshot X11 or Wayland? Try downloading Firefox from Mozilla. Download, unzip, and run firefox-bin from the folder and see if you have the same issue. https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/all/#product-desktop-release Also see what happens under different users. Another trick would be to test your OS on a live usb stick. You can also try Refresh Firefox. https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/refresh-firefox-reset-add-ons-and-settings

Thanks for your comments. Perhaps you missed that I have exactly the same problem with Thunderbird as well. And I have no problem printing with other apps on that system. Printing works with un-Googled Chrome, Evolution, etc. I also have several other systems on different machines: Ubuntu on this machine I'm replying on, another on iOS, two others on Android/Graphene. All of those print as well, where applicable. So I'm sure SUSE works, too. This problem cropped up about 3~4 weeks ago. Prior to that, I could print with no problem in Arch; Firefox or Thunderbird, and have done so numerous times. I suppose it occurred after some general update, as I generally run a system update each week, and on Arch, there may be 250 or more updates each time, too many to track. A particular update could have included Firefox and Thunderbird, or some other system component, but I wouldn't have immediately noticed. I don't think the problem is directly due to OS or any add-ons, but something core and common to both of the Mozilla installations. While the attached images were taken from Firefox for simplicity, the same dialog and failure occurs with Thunderbird (sorry, I'm repeating myself!). So I suggest an issue common to both. Not sure what that could be... And, since you asked, I use X11 exclusively on all Linux machines. Can't stand Wayland :-) But I tried booting into Wayland on the Arch machine, and experienced the same problem with the "stuck" print dialog, even when asking for just a Print Preview. 'lpstat' shows all's well: 2 printers; cups-pdf, and a remote color laser printer, both idle and accepting input. The cups web interface shows no problems (and works for everything else, as stated).

I will look into that, but I tried the "Clear Saved Print Settings" before, with no effect. Re-installing Firefox won't likely fix Thunderbird...

What are you seeing in the journald logs when you try to print?
