I exported my profile to an external drive, then reset my Windows 11 PC. The resulting file is a zip file. When I import, the import starts, then stalls and gives an error. The error log is incomprehensible to me. How can I not lose my local folders and messages? I tried unzipping and importing that folder, but another error. I need help! Ideas? Thanks.

Where are the imapmail\<account> folders? I do not find them in my Thunderbird installation - see attached

Look in your exported, unzipped, profile to see what was zipped.

There is no Mail/Local folders in m Thunderbird install. It does exist in the export, but as per my previous post, there is no location in the install to paste it. Perhaps I should download a fresh copy of Thunderbird?

did you see message folders in the imapmail\<account> folder? That would be the missing message folders. Be sure that you're looking at profile folder and not the installation folder. When you run Thunderbird, there should be a Local Folders shown. And you could highlight local folders, rightclick and create a test folder just to confirm the Local Folder's existence. Then, in file explorer with thunderbird not running, you could copy from the imapmail\<account> folder to the Mail\Local Folders folder.

One more thing - no need to reinstall thunderbird. that sometimes causes new problems. :)

I created a test folder on Mail/Local Folders with Thunderbird shut down and when I opened it the test folder was not there. Yet when I open the install Mail/Local Folders I see all the folders I'm tryhing to import, yet they do not display when Thunderbird I running/ Whussup? See attached attempt at copying -

Sorry, I am not understanding. If you copy those files to Mail\local folders while thunderbird isn't running, they should appear on a restart.

I copied the exported Mail / Local Folders to the not running Thunderbird Mail / Local folders. They all appear in Mail / Local folders when Thunderbird is not running, but when running they are not displayed. I also now understand that only 4 folders were exported - all the resdt appear only as .msf files. I wonder why this happened? See attached photo of exported Local Folders/

I would delete the msf entries, as thunderbird will rebuild them. Also, check the sbd folders as well.

I deleted the .msf files and started Thunderbird, but the Local folders did not appear. Screen shot of Local Mail installation attached. Y9u can see there are no .msf files after starting the app.

I am wondering if there is content in those folders after the various situations that have occurred. I suggest verifying that. There is a free online viewer at https://www.mbox-viewer.com/ that should confirm the content of the folders. If content is good, then another approach, instead of copying in windows file explorer, is to use the addon, importexporttools NG - and then highlight Local Folders, rightclick, select the importexport option to import mbox files, and import one from the exported folder to see if it's viewable. If so, continue the process for the rest of the folders.

David - The MBOX viewer shows emails in the Local Folder files. How do I return them to my Thunderbird installation? (Thanks, by the way)

I am trying the importexport tool - I'll let you know how it goes.

The tool wants to import a profile by default - I tried importing the eported profile (or what I thought it was) and got the same error as when I try to import a single folder. See Attached.

My instructions were to highlight local folders and rightclick and select import mbox. that's not what you did.
