I created a search for any message that is after a date several months ago and it should search in several local folders. It shows not results but looking in the individual local folders shows unread messages.

Is that to be expected?

How exactly did you perform the search? The attached picture shows how it could be done with Classic Search (Ctrl+Shift+F).
