Thunderbird will not connect to IMAP mail server except via VPN
Since yesterday, Thunderbird will not connect to my TalkTalk IMAP mail server unless I switch on a VPN. This is inconvenient. I have no problems accessing my emails through TalkTalk's online mail service, which doesn't happen when the server is down.

Hello there
Could you please send us a copy of your talk talk account settings? Also do the settings for outgoing mail include your SMTP settings from Thunderbird?
This is a long explanation for this topic.
Would you like us to inspect both email settings of both email programs if you can send this?
Thank you kindly.
This is to look into your problem for a solution within Thunderbird.

Hello there We have read the question We try to help
Your connections to your server that you are obviously using for your Thunderbird email business will be from Thunderbird itself.
Your settings for this are a firewall or your antivirus program and whether VPN settings themselves for this connection or with your SMTP configuration for outgoing internet traffic will not be as they should be today. Please look up the disruptive topic for a moment. Configure yourself what it would be?
If you think you have a disturbing add-on or extension, you can boot into trouble shoot mode for Thunderbird. If not, it could be other software.
Check whether you can do this with the add-ons disabled and find the disturbing piece of software add-on in this way and delete it.

VPN services bypass your and some settings directly to reach their destinations. Your pre-existing configuration is bypassed by directly using your VPN software.

Hello there
If you have any reports from your software about erroneous internet traffic on your desktop or monitor with your server, please send them to us and we can help you with this.

Thanks for the replies. My firewall is configured to allow Thunderbird access. Its history also does not show that it has blocked any access attempts by Thunderbird. I have no add-ons, and running Thunderbird in Troubleshoot Mode makes no difference. The only error messages from Thunderbird (in Activity Manager) read "failed to connect with server imap.dsl.pipex.com." No other software is generating error messages.

The problem has now been resolved. I'm not sure how, and yet it has!

Hello there
Okay, your settings are suddenly okay? have they been reset to their default values? Or was it the VPN doing its job again? Oke , thank you for using Thunderbird.
In exceptional cases, troubleshoot mode still has an effect afterwards.
