When opening on a Mac at boot-up Thunderbird starts to open then the screen goes black briefly then TB has closed again. If I open it again then it works as normal.

This only started happening recently. Maybe around the time that I changed the settings to comply with the new requirements to enable encryption.

Are you not able to update to macOS 11 ?
I am currently on the latest OS 13.3.1
In that case, on your first thunderbird startup do https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/troubleshoot-mode-thunderbird
Sorry but I don't have a problem launching launching TB when the computer is already running - only when TB is launched during startup.
