The archived bug report 1245998 from three years ago (version 60) was a somewhat similar problem and the workarounds were helpful but don't solve the problem we have now with the new version 91.10.0. I personally have never had this problem in 10-plus years, so it seems to have been a bug introduced with the most recent version. For others who come across the problem, here are two workarounds in the meantime. 1: Ctrl-O opens the email normally (in read mode). 2: Usually I just move the email into the folder where I'm going to be filing it anyway, and read it there. Emails seem to be opening properly everywhere EXCEPT the Inbox.
