Gmail Messages keep redownloading (was Why is TB CONSTANTLY COMPACTING?????)
TB is CONSTANTLY working it's ass off in the background, compacting folders. It NEVER asks first, it just starts the moment it fires up and continues for HOURS AND HOURS......slowing my computer to the point I am ready to throw it out the window! Between that, and the constant RE-Downloading of emails I already have downloaded - like it's downloading 42.583 emails......WTF FOR????? I need help or I will SHITCAN this program and move on. It has gone from Bad to WORSE over the past year with the above two SHITTY problems I cannot find resolution for. Updating TB brought me the constant compacting problem so Thanks for that SHIT TB.

Taking one step at a time
1. do tools > options > advanced > general > config editor and paste in mail.purge.ask ... is it set to true? If not double click to change from false to true - this should force prompting
2. at tools > options > advanced > network and disk, you can disable automatic compact
How long has it been doing this?

Since the latest update it's been misbehaving with this and other issues. I have applied your fixes......had to change settings on both. Fingers crossed. Thanks for your input!
Actually - longer than that, but this latest update about 2 weeks ago has got TB working constantly diddling one thing or another almost ALL the TIME. Bogging me down for ridiculous reasons like downloading 47,352 emails in this folder and 39,755 in another folder, then deleting them all and starting over.....bleah.
Ah, the massive deletes because of duplicates explains all the compacting, and we can get to the core issue.
The account(s) which are downloading duplicates are associated with which ISPs?
Most of the accounts are Gmail. So far today it seems to be behaving - altho it has a few odd behaviours still. Such as.....the progress bar is glowing and minutely moving, but it doesn't tell me what it's doing.....it's just busy doing what it wants to do. Bogging me down that way too. Sometimes too it tells me it's downloading a message.....for 20 mins or more (should have timed out right?).....and the progress bar just sits there like a constipated goose.
Oh there it goes.......suddenly it's downloading 1 of 10447 messages in "important".....which I don't even use that folder. Hmmmph.
Gmail is defined as an Imap account?
in Thunderbird try unsubscribing the "All Mail" folder. https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/thunderbird-and-gmail and find "Uncheck any folders"
Yes Gmail is all IMAP accounts. This stuff was all working fine until the last few months - so for years, no problem. I begin to suspect Gmail making sneaky tweaks in our account settings as they diddle themselves for "security" or whatever excuse they want to use. For example GMAIL recently REFUSED to give me ANY emails thru TB until I logged in physically to their website and confirmed my existence. Now? After YEARS of no changes???? Anyway I digress..... TB deleted the ALL MAIL folder and informed me that it cannot duplicate the action on Gmail.....lol.....I didn't want it to do that either! Ugh.
