after reinstalling Thunderbird cannot access local folders or emails in inbox that have been read I can access the the unread emails.

I reinstalled Thunderbird and on start up the page is different. The local folders are as usual on the left but the inbox is replaced by the image below. When I click on READ MESSAGES the emails appear and I can read the unread ones but the read ones will not open. I am also unable to open any emails in the Local Folders- I have 4 years of important ones there and need them back asap. Any help would be appreciated ( am 75 so lots of technical terms will definitely confuse me more)

I believe the contents of the local folders are still there as if I do not click on Read Messages I can open a local folder and the list of saved emails are there- but I am unable to open any others unless I restart Thunderbird- also if I double-click on an unread message all of the inbox disappears but returns when I close and restart Thunderbird.
