cannot migrate my emails to thunderbird on my new computer.

I am moving my thunderbird from my windows 7 computer to my new windows 8.1 computer. I saved my old profile on my old computer and put it on a flash drive. I then downloaded thunderbird onto my new windows computer. It does not recognize my old information and I cannot figure out how to import all my emails (over 7000) to my new computer. I tried several things including moving the profile to the new profile but none of the messages show up on my new computer. I could really use some help on this one. I got all my address books imported but really need help getting all my emails and folder into my new Thunderbird.
