Updates (firefox, flash, reinstall) download but (patches, etc.) will not apply. What to do?

Running Windows 8.1 in January 2015, both firefox and adobe flash keep trying to update, but patches will not apply. The same thing happens when I download a new version and try to reinstall either program. What can I do?

Get the installers and install manually.
