OK here's my problem: OS WIN 7 Pro, TB 31.2.0 - fresh installation for both (aka new client system) Setup multiple IMAP accounts > TB creates it's profile under: %systemroot%\users\AppData\Roaming\Thunderbird\Profiles\xxx.default\ImapMail\ where folders are created for each account. Under account settings - synchronization and storage - advanced - offline use > all folders are unticked. As an extra precaution - don't download messages larger then 50 Kb is activated. A quick check revealed that TB has created INBOX-es on the client that are identical in size to the server-based IMAP Inbox. In other words completely ignoring the retention rules.

Puzzled - Frans

Perhaps you did uncheck offline use for Inbox after checking for new mail the first time, so the messages in Inbox got downloaded initially.
