Responding to a more detailed post of this problem, Matt suggested that I go to the Connect.Mozilla Forum.

I did that, but did not find any helpful advice.

The question remains: In Thunderbird, when I close the In Box, how do I re-open it? Seems to me there should be a switch either under View or Window in the Menu Bar. No such thing. Frustrating that accessing such a simple, common tool is (presumably) buried somewhere.
