First Google Chrome works perfectly. The issue is with IE and Firefox. The homepage Google.com has an extra menu at the top and it is totally text, but more importantly, on most websites, only some of the graphics show. (ie Flash). It's worst in Gmail where everything is text-only. And NO, I did not enable on of those visually-impaired settings. I have reset settings in both bad browsers and even downloaded a new copy of Firefox. Same thing happens in IE and Firefox, while Chrome is normal. I did fix it last week, but can't remember what I did. But, after my weekly re-boot, it's baaack. Very frustrating. Been trying lots of suggestions for 2 hours now. Same....help my browsing is crippled.

Are you sure that you haven't enabled high contrast in Windows as it happens is IE as well?

The screenshot complies with what to expect when web pages look like this (no colors and tables cell show border lines).

I don't know if Google Chrome honors that Windows setting.

Have you checked your video display programs? Try downloading the current versions from their web sites. These include but not limited to Adobe Acrobat, Shockwave Flash, and any others.

1. According to ATI/AMD I have latest video drivers 2. Installed latest Acrobat and Shockwave for both IE an FF, restarted, no change. 3. Attached a screen shot of part of my ugly Gmail -similar non-graphics for websites. 4. Gmail looks perfect in Chrome. But equally bad in FF and IE.

Make sure that you haven't enabled a High Contrast theme in the Windows/Mac Accessibility settings.

Make sure that you allow pages to choose their own colors.

  • Tools > Options > Content : Fonts & Colors > Colors : [X] "Allow pages to choose their own colors, instead of my selections above"

Note that these settings affect background images.

Thanks cor-el. I guess the visually-impaired settings are more politically- correct to call them High-Contrast. No, that's not it - but 9 out of 10 solutions on the internet mention these 2 things.. ;) already checked.

There's also a graphics permission thing in about:config for FF. That's not it either - can't be - because the same thing's happening to IE.

Meanwhile Chrome is fine. Did Google do an 'update' and mess up IE and FF?? just sayin'....

re: bottom link on cor-el's reply: It's not a problem in Windows...only in the 2 browsers, Internet Explorer and FireFox. All Windows graphics are fine. Here's a better comparison between www.cfl.ca on Chrome and FF browsers (attached)

Hello,

Try Firefox Safe Mode to see if the problem goes away. Safe Mode is a troubleshooting mode, which disables most add-ons.

(If you're not using it, switch to the Default theme.)

  • You can open Firefox 4.0+ in Safe Mode by holding the Shift key when you open the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.
  • Or open the Help menu and click on the Restart with Add-ons Disabled... menu item while Firefox is running.

Once you get the pop-up, just select "'Start in Safe Mode"

If the issue is not present in Firefox Safe Mode, your problem is probably caused by an extension, and you need to figure out which one. Please follow the Troubleshoot extensions, themes and hardware acceleration issues to solve common Firefox problems article for that.

To exit the Firefox Safe Mode, just close Firefox and wait a few seconds before opening Firefox for normal use again.

When you figure out what's causing your issues, please let us know. It might help other users who have the same problem.

Thank you.

Here is a screenshot from that page with website colors in Firefox disabled.
A High Contrast setting would have the same effect.
As you can see, it looks the same as your screenshot with all background images missing.

Hi Waka_Flocka_Flame. No, that did not change anything. Still has the problem in Safe Mode. But thanks!

Hey cor-el. You are on to something. Where is that setting to disable/enable website colours?? And, also, where is it for IE too?

(As I said above, the settings for FF did not change anything: Tools > Options > Content : Fonts & Colors > Colors : [X] "Allow pages to choose their own colors, instead of my selections above")

As I wrote a few posts above: if it happens in other browsers as well then it is more likely that you inadvertently changed a Windows setting. I only mentioned the Firefox setting above because I used this for the screenshot (I'm on Linux). If the Firefox setting in "Options > Content" is correct then only a Windows setting will override this.

Did you check out the Windows links that I posted above in [/questions/972067#answer-482141]?

Okay cor-el. Your God-like status is reinforced. Turns out I had NO theme and hence no Aero. (not sure if that matters) But once I chose a theme, viola! I am not in a position until end of this week to reboot Windows and see if this happens again. But now I know what to do. Thanks a million.
