Thunderbird first stopped sending...now it doesn't load or do anything else, even after removing it and reloading it 3 times.
Three times I have removed TBird and reloaded it, but it reloads with all my mail already there, but still not uploading new mail. I have 2 gmail accounts on it and neither does anything anymore. Thanks in advance if you can help solve this...I really love TBird and am so used to it after many years that I doubt I can find anything to replace it, and I don't want to!

I would start by adding the TB profile folder as an Exception in AVG, and disabling https secure connection scanning (or excluding thunderbird.exe) :
In TB, Help/Troubleshooting, about:profiles to see the profile location.
I put Tbird.exe in exclusions in AVG...it didn't seem to make any difference. The little blue "get new messages" wheel in the upper left just keeps turning, on both accounts, and the green line stays at the bottom. There has never been any kind of error message except about 2-3 weeks ago, if I tried to send an attachment, it started saying that a draft hadn't been saved, or a copy hadn't been kept in the sent folder, or that the server had timed out. Regular text emails seemed to be ok. Thanks for your help.
It's not sufficient to exclude the exe file - you have to exclude the profile folder or turn off the useless Email Shield. To test the effect of AVG and other startup apps, run Windows in safe mode.
