hello ! - I don't know - but since a short time (maybe the last automatic thunderbird update) it is not really possible to use the program any more - as all my emails - that I respond are getting questionmarks in the place of "tab/ enter/ or special caracters - that makes my emails "unreadable". I already have tried to change the text encoding from western or unicode - but does not really help ? - I can not remember that I had this problem already before - and I am using thunderbird since more than 5 years. can someone please help me ?

That must be pretty frustrating .....

Would you try this please :
Go to the Configuration Editor (Tools, Options, Advanced, General, Config Editor).
Scroll down to mail.strictly_mime
Click on it and change it from "false" to true.
That should do the trick ….. (fingers crossed).
