Why does the new mail "flag" go away so quickly?

I'm a relatively new user of Thunderbird (Windows). When I download new emails, an indicator/flag appears next to each new email to help the new emails stand out. However, this indicator goes away when I read one of the new emails (and possibly after s short period of time has elapsed)). Is there a way to make this indicator persist for a longer time (i.e. until Thunderbird is shut down or until the next time emails are downloaded)?

Hi Thunderbird has a setting to control how long before a message is marked as read. Try adjusting that... Menu - Options - Options - Display - open Advanced tab - uneder Reading - 'Automatically mark message as read' & associated settings. I hope that is what you're looking for. Agnes

That took care of the issue. Thanks

I had initially thought that the proposed solution to change the setting under Menu - Options - Options - Display - open Advanced tab was the answer. However, all that effected was when the message was marked read. What I was referring to in my original post was the setting of the flag (looks like a yellow asterisk) immediately to the left of the Subject in the Inbox . I don't know the name of this flag because there is no separate column header for it. Just to clarify: this flag gets turned on when I initially click on 'get messages', but it turns off for all the newly downloaded messages as soon as I read even 1 of the new messages. I would like the flag to remain on until I manually turn it off or until I have real ALL of the new messages.

I have this issue also, how do we fix it?

Hi There is a discussion earlier on this site that describes a way to view emails without the "new message" flag going away, so TampaTom, this may look familiar... If you open and close an email message, the new mail indicator goes away. If you close Thunderbird, all new mail indicators go away. There is a way to read the email message without opening and closing, so the new mail indicator does not go away. When I read an email I am not Opening, and then Closing it. I just use the split screen view and read the email in the lower part of the screen. That way, the stars don't disappear for any message I have not read, until I next check for new messages. You could try that... To turn it on -> View - layout - Message pane. (Or press F8) I hope that helps, Agnes

Oh and I forgot to say - if you leave a message open in the View pane long enough that the Unread status changes, the new mail indicator will go away.
