Can I export all my emails in one go as separate files on backup hard drive. Windows Live Mail lets me do it, and it lets me view any email in plain source view too, can Thunderbird do those things ?

Try the import export tools for export options. https://addons.thunderbird.net/en-US/thunderbird/addon/importexporttools/

EML is what your looking for I think.
