Although Thunderbird shows it is trying to download emails, nothing comes through as of a few days ago despite deleting emails, compacting folders and updating.

I have started it in safe mode. Nothing changed. Thanks

Have you tried disabling your anti virus program. They are often the cause of mail simply stopping.
