I stopped receiving email on one account yesterday. I also cannot send from this account, I have several email addresses & they all work except one. I have not changed anything, it just stopped working. This has previously happened but always starts working again within an hour or two, but not this time.

I get the following message: "Sending of password for user xxxxx did not succeed. Mail server inbound.att.net responded: Server error - Please try again later."

I am able to log into my ISPs web-based email interface & new email is there.

I checked all the settings & removed & re-entered my same password, but to no avail.

Do I just have to wait another day or two for the AT&T server to get up & running? If my email is already on their server then why can't I access it?

Thanks.

Your guess is as good as mine... But you should expect at some point ATT, without notification, will require mail keys, once they get their system sorted out.

I think you have to create a 'secure mail key' and use that as the password in TB.

Thanks -

I read through the link you provided & am just as confused as the OP why replacing one password with another is required. And why the heck doesn't AT&T notify people of this.

My other 4 email accounts work so I wonder why this particular one was chosen to mess things up.

Guess I'll have to create a 'secure mail key'.

Thanks again for your help.

I tried but have the same problem these people have: https://forums.att.com/t5/AT-T-Internet-Email-Security/Secure-Mail-Key/td-p/5590547

Hmm... something went wrong. Give it another try later or call us at 800.288.2020 (611 from your AT&T wireless phone).

It said I may need to use a secure mail key. Of course I don't have one to use. I tried several times but to no avail. Then I went to check my email using my Firefox browser & got a message I was locked out because of too many attempts. I had to use the old IE & was able reset my password & get access to the web based email. I tried TB using the new password but it didn't work.

I called the number in the message but they could not help. The dept I need to speak with is closed till Monday. Another reason to drop AT&T with slow DSL.

My email mysteriously started working again today. And it's using the password that I had to change because I got locked out. IOW it is not using the Secure Mail Key. I have no idea what's going on.

I can still send email from the problem account. I just can't download it to TB at this time. This has been a come and go problem for me, but usually it just straightens itself out. I associate it with the ATT use of Yahoo servers.

The error message spoke of server settings that could be the problem and needed to be changed. I cannot duplicate it now. All that I can remember is the setting for "leave messages on server."

A few days ago I started having problems receiving email on one account. I'm not sure if it's the same acct as before. After a time I get a message the password failed.

I re-entered my password (the same one) in the TB server settings but that made no difference.

However I access my ATT/Yahoo email via Firefox & everything looks OK. I then go back & open TB again and now it retrieves the email. I've done several times & so far it works. For some reason accessing my ATT/Yahoo email triggers something & makes TB work. Obviously this is not a long term solution, but hopefully whatever is messed up with the servers will get fixed shortly. If not I'll change the password & see if that fixes things.

Accessing my ATT/Yahoo email via Firefox, which used to get things working, no longer did. But a day later Thunderbird started working again.

Today Thunderbird no longer works again. Going to ATT/Yahoo email via Firefox does not get it working either.

I changed my password, but that make no difference.

The error message I get is "Sending of password for user xxxx did not succeed. Mail server inbound.att.net responded: +"

How do I get the att server to respond to Thunderbird?
