FireFox hangs (not responsive) and tries to restore session

For the past several weeks Quantum has been either asking to restore the previous session or just hangs at start up (showing "not responding"). When asked to restore or not, It does not matter what I choose; both options result in Firefox hanging.

Here is the troubleshooting that I have done:

Shutdown and start PC (shutdown, not restart) - will allow Firefox to start OK only once or twice. A simple reboot does not help, must be a cold boot, not a warm boot. Delete sessionstore.jsonlz4 file in profile folder - Does not always work, can still hang on startup Uninstall/reinstall Firefox with refresh - similar to shutdown/start, only allows Firefox to open normally a couple of times. Uninstall Firefox, delete profile folders (there were three), reinstall - It looked like this would do the trick, it did not. Problems started again after several openings and closings of Firefox.

Some observations/questions:

Task manager shows 4 to 7 processes of Firefox running (see attached screenshot). This does not seem normal, is it?

There is no sessionstore.jsonlz4 file in the one profile folder that is currently present and yet Firefox still hangs. It is trying to open two tabs and I don't know why.

Opening in safe mode sometimes works, mostly does not.

I have been using Firefox for years, and do not understand why suddenly I'm having so many problems. I would really hate to abandon Firefox, but I might have to if I can't get it working.

Thanks, Andrew

I actually used suggestions from both Pkshadow and cor-el. I used the methods in Pkshadow's response. When Firefox still misbehaved after reinstall, I booted into WIndows safe mode as suggested by cor-el to prove a sneaking suspicion that I had of the real cause; the Trusteer Rapport End Point Security software that I had installed on my PC. Once I uninstalled Trusteer, Firefox started to run as normal.

Trusteer had been on my machine for years and never caused a problem until now. I could not uninstall the extension because the Trusteer software automatically adds the extension when installing Firefox (as of Trusteer version 15 I believe). The only remedy was to get rid of Trustee altogether.

Thanks everyone! Andrew

Hi, Firefox is a multi-processor browser so what you are seeing is normal operation. Of Flash and Sound/Video go into the Sandbox which requires it you Extensions require it as well as they use give or take 20megs each.

If you are low on ram then can turn them down or can up them from default but will use more and create heat.

The abandon again....ok well do what ya gotta do. Please try this since you have tried other things. if not this then it is your Profile and other files causing the issue. uninstall Firefox. Then Delete the Mozilla Firefox Folders in C:\Program Files , C:\Program Files(x86) & C:\ProgramData Then restart system. Then run Windows Disk Cleanup. (Note: This should be Pinned and run Weekly, If never done below expect 10's of gig's) Then run it again and click the button that says Cleanup System Files. Note: your Firefox Profile is saved. But you should make a back up before you do :

Reinstall with Current Release Firefox 60.0.2 with a Full Version Installer

Please let us know if this solved your issue or if need further assistance.

Boot the computer in Windows Safe mode with network support to see if that has effect in case security software is causing problems.
