can i backup my top sites list?

I think Top Sites are stored in the places.sqlite database file in your profile folder (and basically a bookmarks & history query), so your best bet would be to back up and restore that file.

Of course restoring it later means all recent history and stored bookmarks will be lost at that point. It’s up to you if you think that’s worth the effort - creating additional bookmarks for them periodically might be an idea.
