Takes much longer (10 sec) to delete a msg and 4to 5 sec. to display a msg after clicking on it. Didn't used to be this way.

just recently, it is taking longer to open a message ( 4 to 5 seconds after clicking on it) and especially 10 seconds or more to select and delete a message. There was a recent change to Thunderbird that may be the culprit. I carry lots of msgs in my INBOX but that has not been a problem before.

Statements like this can be a red flag, because you should NOT a) see a difference in performance when updating Thunderbird, and b) (generally speaking) not see a change in performance over time (unless something drastically changed in your environment). In short you shouldn't need to change your behavior.

If you recently updated the cause could be Thunderbird (in which case it should be reported as a bug). Or, more often, it could be caused by antivirus software. To test the later simply start Windows in safe mode. If it is faster then do the AV adjustments suggested by christ1.

It should be noted however that those adjustments cannot be reliably depended on, because things with AV can break again. If you encounter problems again in the future then you need to retest.

With your growing Inbox it may be a problem now. Accumulating messages in Inbox isn't best practice. It is recommended to keep your Inbox as tidy as possible. Inbox is most susceptible for corruption. Your anti-virus software will scan the entire file every time a message is received or deleted. Also anti-virus software is known to corrupt mail files. So make sure you do have a backup of your Thunderbird profile. https://support.mozilla.org/kb/profiles-where-thunderbird-stores-user-data#w_backing-up-a-profile

Some general suggestions wrt anti-virus software to prevent problems in the future.

Create an exception in your anti-virus software for the Thunderbird profile folder, so that the anti-virus real-time scanner will not scan it. http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_folder_-_Thunderbird

Don't let your anti-virus software scan incoming and outgoing messages.

Don't let your anti-virus software scan attachments.

Don't let your anti-virus software intercept your secure connection to the server.

Remove any add-ons your anti-virus software may have installed in Thunderbird.

Keep it working. http://kb.mozillazine.org/Keep_it_working_-_Thunderbird

And last but not least, backup your Thunderbird profile on a regular basis.

Problem solved. I use "Securit" antivirus system, which was scanning all my emails every time I deleted a message. Turned off that function and all is well now. Why scan everything is I was only deleting one message? Why scan anything when I delete?
