Cursor no longer appears in Google Home page search box, but instead on URL address bar, when opening new tabs, since the Firefox version 59.0.2 update.

This just changed on the last update and apparently was an issue on an earlier version (57.0) and supposedly resolved. Please fix or share how to find the way to fix this. It is very annoying!

You mean when you open Google page the cursor is gone?

Is this about setting Google as the home page or about the new tab page?

I don't know if there is a Web Extension that allows to select where to position the cursor (location/address bar or on the web page).

When I open Firefox my Google Home page shows up fine and my cursor does show up, but not where it used to. Before this last Firefox update the cursor always showed up on the search bar of the Google page, and now when I open a new tab/page it defaults to the top on the URL address bar. I don't know if there's an extension to fix that either...it's a thought. I am not a techie, though, so wouldn't know how to fix that. I hoped that Firefox could un-tweak whatever they did.

I edited my original Support Forum question above so that it makes more sense.

I think you mean a new tab (Ctrl+t); this problem may not occur in a new window (Ctrl+n) which has different behavior.

If you are using the New Tab Override extension to replace the built-in new tab page with Google, there's a setting for where the cursor ends up. Check out the screenshots:

https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/new-tab-override/

If you were using a different extension, see whether it has a similar option or whether you might need to switch.

Thank you jscher2000. I don't know if I am using the New Tab Override or not (sorry to be so dense and not very techie savvy). I have not changed any of my settings on the Firefox Options page for awhile (or with Google?). When I click on the "Open a new tab" button, it does show the Ctrl+T as the way it opens a tab. (I learned something new). Doing the Ctrl+n, as you suggested, opens the new tab AND puts the cursor where I want it. Does this link provide instructions on changing the "Open a new tab" to work as Ctrl+n instead? I've bookmarked the link you provided so that I can read about it this weekend when I have more time to work on this.

Hi LizzyM, is your new tab page Google (official Google page) or the built-in page, which has a search bar, tiles for recently visited sites, and various other content. (More on the built-in new tab page here: Customize your New Tab page to hide or display content)

For the built-in page, I don't know of a way to move the cursor into the search box.

For the actual Google home page, which you can show on new tabs using the New Tab Override extension, the add-on moves the cursor.

I have the official Google home page, which I set up as the default home page in the Options section on Firefox. It is not the default page with all the tiles of visited sites that comes with Firefox.

So I will read the info on the link and figure out how to get that add-on. In the meantime, the Ctrl+n will be a good fix for now. I'll drop a note back for help if I can't (I should be okay).

I really appreciate your feedback and help, as I appreciate the feedback from the others that responded. It's a minor nuisance, but I do like how it used to work.

Thank you!

Hi, this maybe what you are looking for. https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/focus-follows-mouse/

Can also search in the URL for other mouse related extensions.
