My FF recently updated to 59.0.1. I assume it was from 58. While starting up for the first time, the new version asked for the master password; however, I pressed cancel (3 times), because the request was unexpected at that time (58 wouldn't ask me during startup, but only when a login was displayed).

My old profile is unusable since. At some point, FF did not even accept the return key after entering a URL. I opened the settings with the mouse, but couldn't even click the "Saved Logins" button.

I cleaned the profile since, and it is now usable, but all data is gone. The foremost question is: can I somehow recover my saved logins? Places and search engines would be second. I tried https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/recovering-important-data-from-an-old-profile, but it does not work.

Can anyone help for the latest FF version?

Chosen solution

I recovered much data by copying just 4 files to a pristine profile (key4, logins.json, places.sqlite, and search.json.mozlz4). This is a big relief.

I will probably skip the cumbersome part of tracing it down to the culprit, and setup addons again in the new profile.

Hi, I tried to https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/back-and-restore-information-firefox-profiles and can reproduce the weird issues that I described. After copying my profile to a pristine one, I did the following:

  • enter the master password when asked during startup
  • navigate to about:preferences (note that hitting the enter key works fine here)
  • search "save" in preferences which shows the "Saved Logins" button.
  • Neither clicking it nor hitting the enter or space key on the button opens the dialog.
  • note that the checkbox for the master password is unexpectedly unchecked!
  • When I open a new tab now, I can no longer navigate to a URL as the return key does nothing.

I still hope that the passwords are there, but how to export them when the UI is broken?

Another important question: as the master password seems unset in the preferences, but FF asks for it on startup. Is my master password now compromised?

If the new profile works then you can transfer files from a previously used profile to the new profile, but be cautious not to copy corrupted files to avoid carrying over the problem. Never work with original files.

If have the Profile out and having issues with the program/Firefox uninstall Firefox. Then Delete the Mozilla Firefox Folders in C:\Program Files , C:\Program Files(x86) & C:\ProgramData Then restart system. Then run Windows Disk Cleanup. (Note: This should be Pinned and run Weekly, If never done below expect 10's of gig's) Then run it again and click the button that says Cleanup System Files. Note: your Firefox Profile is saved. But you should make a back up before you do :

Reinstall with Current Release Firefox 59.0.1 with a Full Version Installer

Firefox 58+ versions have switched to logins.json and key4.db (SQLite) and no longer uses key3.db, but can fallback to key3.db if you remove key4.db. It is possible that something went wrong with the migration from key3.db to key4.db.

If you have key3.db in the profile folder then try to remove the current key4.db file. If you have logins.json.corrupt then rename this file to logins.json.

Make sure to keep a backup of all involved files (logins.json and key3.db and key4.db). You need to close Firefox when you make these modifications to files in the profile folder.

You can use the button on the "Help -> Troubleshooting Information" (about:support) page to go to the current Firefox profile folder or use the about:profiles page.
