Thanks for version 57. I now have a blank slate of a browser. All my open tabs, bookmarks, passwords and preferences are now lost.

I was auto-updated to Version 57. Now I'm presented with a blank slate of a browser. I never previously logged into Firefox because I had no need to. Nor did I feel it necessary to sync between devices since I only have a laptop and phone and use them very differently.

Is there any way to restore everything? Preferences, add-ons, bookmarks, history, saved logins/passwords. Or was this info only stored on my laptop and not on your side? I've checked the Firefox backup folder and it's all clean and fresh with today's date as date last modified.

I've already started over and have an old bookmarks file somewhere but still face hours of work.

Your Firefox data is only stored locally if you do not use Sync.

Refresh is supposed to preserve much of your data, but custom preferences and add-ons are always removed. If you check your desktop for the Old Firefox Data folder, does it have a folder inside with freshly updated files? The folder name is partially random characters and partially a word like default.

If you have a folder you want to restore in its entirety, please see: I did a Reset of Firefox - How do i get add my 'Old firefox data' back?

If the Refresh was interrupted, your old profile folder may not have made it to the desktop. In that case, here are some more places to look:

Does the Profile Manager list your immediately previous profile folder?

To check on that, inside Firefox, type or paste about:profiles in the address bar and press Enter/Return to load it.

This page should list all the profiles Firefox is currently aware of. If you see a profile that is not currently set as default that looks promising, scroll down to it and click the Set as default profile button below that profile, then scroll back up and click the Restart normally button. (There are some other buttons, but I think those are still "under construction" so please ignore them.)

Firefox should exit and then start up using the other profile. Is that the right one?

If it's not there...

Did Firefox orphan your old profile folder?

Here's how to check whether there are additional profile folders in the standard location in addition to the one you're using. Start by opening your current Firefox profile folder using either:

* "3-bar" menu button > "?" button > Troubleshooting Information
* (menu bar) Help > Troubleshooting Information
* type or paste about:support in the address bar and press Enter/Return

In the first table on the page, click the "Open Folder" button, to launch a new window listing various files and folders in Windows Explorer.

In the Windows Explorer address bar, click the capitalized word Profiles to move up one level in the folder hierarchy. More than one folder here by any chance? Do the files in those folders look like they were last updated around the time of the update?

If you've got any promising looking folders, you can try the same kind of recovery you would have used if the Refresh had been successful.

Not necessarily : oldfirefoxdata look for a folder by that name on the desktop. If there great. If not please look for which folder is the oldest and that will be your old profile which had corruption in it :

If find the older Profile will need to move some things but be cautious not to copy corrupted files to avoid carrying over the problem. Never work with original files.

Please let us know if this solved your issue or if need further assistance.

Thanks jscher2000! I found an older file in the root directory, created a new profile and set this as default. Then did a 'normal restart'. I had resigned myself to starting from scratch again. You saved me hours of tedium and frustration.

And from now on, I'll use Sync with most of the options switched off.
