So i noticed that Firefox upgraded me to Quantum. I had an open mind but upon a quick perusal i realized it was simply unacceptable. Alot of the major add ons that made Firefox what it was were not available. As far as I was concerned I wasnt using Firefox but some foreign browser. The main issue for me was particularly the session manager. Im a browser hoarder and like to keep track of articles and sites and go back to them at later dates.. I was in horror that my session were all gone so I attempted to download to ESR 52 that was no use either as it doesnt support session manager. I downloaded the Firefox 56 and made a new profile. I copied everthing from old profile to new but kept two separate profiles. The session were all there but the history didnt transfer for some reason. So i deleted the new profile all together and am back to old profile but once again history isnt there. What am i doing wrong? What happened here?

I am starting to hate Firefox for this. I am not a tech expert and all that api crap means nothing to me. If you are gonna upgrade you cant change my entire life. Not seeing my sessions and history is just short of a hard drive being wiped clean. Its like they are selling prime rib to a vegan. I just need the Firefox i know and love. Make it faster make it cleaner but dont change it in its entirety please.

Anyone who can help with the question i would really appreciate it...

Chosen solution

Ok i found the solve through other methods guys. I feel for all of you guys who used to love firefox like me. I dont think the developers truly get the devastation of losing all your history and or sessions.

So for those who upgraded by choice or by force know that your sessions are still there but just wont work with Quantum or ESR 52. It will only work with 56. From what i am hearing it is a bitt of a security risk so have virus spyware the whole works. For me this is the only option firefox without my add ons is not firefox at all. Developers need to get this thru their skull. I tried quantum for a few minutes and was like what the hell am i even doing right now? I just couldnt i was devastated.

For those with missing history after downgrading try this option that 100 percent worked for me. I was so overjoyed because it worked first go no headache it was almost too good to be true.

If your Firefox profile folder includes a "places.sqlite.corrupt" file, one reported fix is to open the Firefox profile folder and, after closing Firefox completely, delete or rename the places.sqlite file and then rename "places.sqlite.corrupt" to "places.sqlite". (If you see any other places.sqlite* files, delete those as well, so that only one places.sqlite file remains.) It is possible that certain security or "cleanup" software (e.g., CCleaner) is causing the places.sqlite file corruption. It is also possible that Firefox was not closed properly, as might happen when your computer loses power with Firefox running, which can cause a corrupt places.sqlite file. Always make sure that you close Firefox properly (e.g., no Firefox processes in the Windows Task Manager) before shutting down the computer. [10]

Hoping and praying Firefox can turn Quantum into the utopia they envision it to be but some add ons are non negotiable. For example i am willing to download a new session saver but what will become of the years of sessions i have stored? Please keep that in mind. Its not me being an inflexible crybaby its literally firefox wiping years of memories and work clean like it never existed. To make this transition work you have to think about who your hurting while you make things better faster brighter etc.

Edited to remove scrollbar in 2nd paragraph. I also marked this as the solution. aw

Going back : unfortunately 56.0.2 is no longer safe to use for every day use, but 52.5.0 ESR is! It will continue to get security updates until May 2018, and you can download and install it from this page: https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/organizations/all/ Note : Legacy Extensions will be deleted or removed in any version update after May 2018.

You should make a backup of your Profile before going back and just because: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/back-and-restore-information-firefox-profiles

This the best way to uninstall Firefox. Then Delete the Mozilla Firefox Folders in C:\Program Files and C:\Program Files(x86) Then restart system. Then run Windows Disk Cleanup. Then run it again and click the button that says Cleanup System Files. Note: your Firefox Profile is saved. But you should make a back up before you do : https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/back-and-restore-information-firefox-profiles

Reinstall with Current Release Firefox 57.0 with a Full Version Installer https://www.mozilla.org/firefox/all/

Unfortunately every agreement for any software you install from everywhere says everyone can change your life and will.... Especially MS 10 with no control unless you find out. Such as get rid of the tiles and and use Classic Start Menu is like running Win7 now, Stop MS from tracking you O&O ShutUp10 and then there is the reasons that Mozilla had to do this, security was the main reason. https://www.howtogeek.com/333230/why-firefox-had-to-kill-your-favorite-extension/ How about looking at these 2 URL's also : https://www.howtogeek.com/333110/how-to-customize-firefox-quantum-and-remove-the-white-space-around-the-title-bar/ and The name is not descriptive enough : https://www.howtogeek.com/332449/whats-new-in-firefox-quantum/

More information will come out slowly. New extensions are being made and some older ones being updated that are tracked here : http://bit.ly/2j0Anlj

PKShadow youre response left me with a headache. ... I need my history back.... I have gone back and forth between numerous versions since last night when i noticed the upgrade. THE ESR 52 is useless because it doesnt support session manager. Firefox without session manager has 0 use to me its like a suitcase full of money in the middle of the desert. Its like living in a mansion without furniture and running water. i tried it didnt work. Right now i am using 56 but i am going to search for a good virus protection program i guess. i need my history back. I need a laymans answer to that.

You should have posted a question about this before switching back an forth and doing so again.....

History is not Bookmarks just to be clear on this.

So are you looking for history or Bookmarks.

If history is not found the usual way of Click the Firefox Tool Bar --> History--> Show All History Should show up as mine go back before the update. It may still be in your profile but I do not think it is. You can try : https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/profiles-where-firefox-stores-user-data and https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/recovering-important-data-from-an-old-profile and https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/profile-manager-create-and-remove-firefox-profiles

Please let us know if this solved your issue or if need further assistance.

Your Info maybe stored in Session Manager. Contact the Developer of this add-on for information on how to retrieve and read the info if possible.

thisis4real90, thanks for posting how you fixed the problem (I marked your answer as the solution).

The places.sqlite corruption was probably the result of the fix for Bug 1415133 - Downgrading Firefox 57 to 52 ESR loses bookmarks Ref:

  • https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1415133#c9 The patch is trivial, it will just cause Places to consider the database corrupt if its schema version is too much in the future. On such corruption Places throws away the db and creates a new one, importing bookmarks from the last backup.
  • Bug 1416506 - Downgrading Firefox 57 to 52 ESR loses session

Please observe Bugzilla Etiquette before commenting in bug reports.

P.S. The above answer is actually a quote from http://kb.mozillazine.org/Bookmarks_history_and_toolbar_buttons_not_working_-_Firefox#If_a_places.sqlite.corrupt_file_exists

I added a note to the MozillaZine KB article section, in case it helps others with the same problem.

I am not very software savvy. I am reading practically everything on this subject. I can understand some of the info, some is too technical for me. I have not yet found a solution, but I will continue searching for one.

me too. I have had the places.sqlite corrupt twice now, second time was monday the 26th at 1:40pm right while I was using Firefox. Did not close it, had open tabs, just cleared the History. Not sure what is causing it to corrupt.

Hi, mark. I'm sorry to hear that you are having problems but this support thread was for helping thisis4real90 (the "question owner"), who asked about loss of Firefox History after a downgrade to Firefox 52 ESR. This question is now solved as far as the original poster is concerned. If you are also having issues with History loss (corruption) after downgrading to Firefox 52 ESR, you should start a new thread. See Mozilla Support rules and guidelines under "Posting support requests".

I'll close this thread.

I see you already have a support request open about ongoing problems you are having with Firefox 58 History, so you should add any new information about that issue to your original support question, https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1203820 FF 58 clears history, sometimes after 4 days, sometimes after 7 days, sometimes on reboot but not always
