as part of a major reconfiguration of my system, exported bookmarks, uninstalled old FF, updated to 56.0.1, then imported bookmarks. Now they're all displaying the default gray globe. I can get the site's icon back by going to the site, but I've got around 200, so that's ridiculous.

https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/896179 is no help. There is no places.sqlite to delete anymore, and the checkplaces addon that could once be used to solve this problem is now defunct.

Surely there's some way other way to globally refresh icons?

Yes there was. By not importing your bookmarks as they were saved in your profile and yes you have to go to every single one of them to get icon back.

There was a thing years ago but was taken off do to dail up and never replaced. Should give you a idea if need the bookmark after 6mos if not been there prob can delete it.

Yes, favicons are lost when you restore bookmarks. There used to be an extension that could reload the favicons, but that no longer works in current Firefox releases.

Thx for letting me know.

Will not be marking the problem as solved, however, as it has not been. Surely this is an issue that the developers should pay some attention to; it can't be that difficult to write some code that runs through the bookmark array and automatically visits each site to refresh the icons!

Trouble with that though in this day and age it would be interpreted as attacks.

The old thing used go out and contact all your bookmarks. People have thousands so for you maybe not so bad but all of a sudden your IP starts pinging 1000's of sites. not good. As well there is lots of people with slow connections which would tie it up and make Firefox a slug while it was doing this. Then you have people on metered time.

It is a good thing as mentioned if you never update a icon then maybe do not need the bookmark. I have a wack should look at and delete.

It is not feasible if you put it all together. Nice wish though.

Heh... just found this put you will have to read. https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/bookmarks-favicon-images/ The other one went ver 48 only And all the support how to's are archived due to code changes.

Please let us know if this solved your issue or if need further assistance.

Hmmm, I guess it makes sense. D---d inconvenient, though.

No, that's not the way I work. I run a tight ship. I keep temporary sites in a special temporary bookmark folder, and periodically clean it out. My other bookmarks are all permanent. I may not visit a site for two or three years--but I still want it there. If I decide I may not want it, I shift it over to Temporary for a while, and then eventually it gets deleted. So I already have a system for this. I don't need gray icons for it.
