E.g., this morning, I was watching a commentary video from a valid website. This has occurred a number of times over the months that I've used Firefox on my home PC (16 Gb RAM, Intel i7 CPU, 1 Tb hard drive; it's about five years old). The video will play properly for a few minutes, but then the window goes "blank", turning completely black or white, while the sound continues to play properly. I would very much appreciate your help with solving this, by the way. Thank you in advance.

Chosen solution

You could try this solution: Hello,

Try disabling graphics hardware acceleration in Firefox. Since this feature was added to Firefox it has gradually improved but there are still a few glitches.

You will need to restart Firefox for this to take effect so save all work first (e.g., mail you are composing, online documents you're editing, etc.,) and then perform these steps:

In Firefox 54 and below:

  1. Click the menu button New Fx Menu and select Options (Windows) or Preferences (Mac, Linux).
  2. Select the Advanced panel and the General tab.
  3. Uncheck Use hardware acceleration when available.
  4. Close Firefox completely and then restart Firefox to see if the problem persists.

In Firefox 55 and above:

  1. Click the menu button New Fx Menu and select Options (Windows) or Preferences (Mac, Linux).
  2. Select the General panel.
  3. Under Performance, uncheck Use recommended performance settings. Additional settings will be displayed.
    Fx55Performance-disableHWA
  4. Uncheck Use hardware acceleration when available.
  5. Close Firefox completely and then restart Firefox to see if the problem persists.

MattCamp, THANK YOU! My PC has Firefox 55... I followed your instructions, unchecked the appropriate items, completely restarted Firefox, and watched a few videos. No problems were observed; things worked properly. I then read Mozilla/Firefox's info concerning updating graphics drivers and followed those directions. The Windows(R) 10 automatic update searched for, found, downloaded & installed the current driver for my NVIDIA GeForce GT 520 graphics card. I then exited Firefox, restarted Windows, watched a few videos, and things worked properly. Thank you very much, again.
