I already downloaded Firefox - 53.0.tar.bz2 but websites still report I am using an outdated older version - I was hoping to install the latest more secure browser. Any ideas on how I can move forward at this point - I am not a GEEK sadly so have to work with a large amount of trial and error. thanks.

You can see the current Firefox version in "Help > About" and you can also check "Help -> Troubleshooting Information" and possibly about:profiles for profile locations (compatibility.ini gives the location of the file that last used the profile).

Websites say that Firefox is outdated or incompatible even though it's the latest version https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/websites-say-firefox-outdated-or-incompatible

Did you verify that you are starting the new version and not the older version?

Are you using a desktop launcher or are you using another way?

Can you start this new version via a terminal window (cd <path to firefox> and ./firefox)?

Note that Firefox 45.9.0 is an ESR version. This ESR version will be replaced by Firefox 52.1.0 ESR.

Hi, many thanks for your reply to my querie. I use my desktop launcher to start firefox. I am unable to ascertain which version is running on my computer as my desktop does not contain the usual  ? button - in the settings menu. When the Firefox Home page opens there is no Version number beside the Firefox Logo/Icon I did a search of my system using the "pFind 5.11 - File Finder" and discovered several Firefox files/folders in 3 different locations ie. SYSTEM files / PERSONAL files / CURRENT directory I should say that I am using LINUX PUP 4.0.4 -slacko 14.1 distribution. SYSTEM = X3 files/folders for Firefox-38.3.0 SYSTEM = X3 files/folders for Firefox-45.9.0 PERSONAL= X14 files/folders (one notably) Mozilla Firefox-45.9.Oesr.files CURRENT directory= same as PERSONAL directory !

I am considering starting Firefox in Safe Mode to see if I can start Firefox in a specified path but this is all new to me. I am unfamiliar with the term ESR Version ? Thanks again for your replies.

I wonder if any downloaded file is actually installing ? Some Linux software will not be compatible with Fx53.

Some Linux Operating Systems that are likely to be compatible may not yet have updated to Fx52 exr from Fx45 esr I have a Debian 8 that is still using Firefox 45.9.0 esr and not reporting any updates available.

Sorry, I appear to have missed the QUOTE button to reply to these posts, and added my messages to the "new question" page - I am just in the wrong age group (OAP) !

Thank-you for your help, I pressed the f10 key and now see that I am running Firefox ESR 45.9 - it remains to be seen whether this will be updated to a newer version,as my Firefox came as a package. At least I know that I am reasonably up to date - and not having to wait for an infinite amount of time till my LINUX distributor deemed it necessary for me to update my repositories. Don't know why I do not have the help / ? on my MENU button but I am happy with the result. Thank-you again for your assistance.
