When using MS 'Outlook.com' I can receive mail but when I click the 'New' option - in order to write mail - this fails. If I try to open it in a new tab this hangs there with the words 'almost done'.

This should be fixed in the 45.0.1 update. Is that available for your distribution? See: Update Firefox to the latest release.
If you can't update, the workaround is to accept third party cookies...
