Is there any way to use the private browsing feature for all tabs by default, and yet keep selected cookies?

I'd like to use Private Browsing by default for all tabs, but still have Firefox keep selected cookies around so I don't have to repeatedly sign on to sites like Amazon and Yahoo. I realize that this may expose me to some tracking, but I'm willing to make the tradeoff.

Is there any way to do this?

hi HaroldB, i'm presuming you would like to get the benefit of tracking protection in "normal browsing mode" as well. this can be switched on through a "hidden" preference at the moment: enter about:config into the firefox address bar (confirm the info message in case it shows up) & search for the preference named privacy.trackingprotection.enabled. double-click it and change its value to true.

a personal recommendation in regards to cookies... the most privacy-friendly option would be to select "firefox will use custom settings for history" and "keep cookies until i close firefox" in the privacy section of your preferences. afterwards you could create exceptions just for those particular sites where you want to stay logged in across sessions. you can also easily set that for the current site you're on by right-clicking on a blank spot and going to view page info > permissions. When you run Firefox in mode then no data is stored in the Firefox profile folder, so it won't be possible to keep any 'remember me' cookie.

You can check the "Accept third-party cookie" settings and possibly select "From visited".

  • Tools > Options > Privacy > Firefox will: "Use custom settings for history"

You can set network.cookie.thirdparty.sessionOnly to true on the about:config page to make third-party cookies behave as session cookies that expire when Firefox is closed.

You can use an extension to get Private Browsing mode support per tab.

That is certainly a large portion of what I wanted. Turning it on worked fine... hopefully, it will decrease tracking.

But it would be nice if I could get complete Private Browsing along with keeping some cookies, too!

It must store them somewhere, no? if I enable Private Browsing and go to my, yahoo, it makes me sign in. But if, in the same session, I go elsewhere and then come back to my.yahoo, it doesn't make me sign in again.

As long as at least one PB mode tab is open then Firefox keeps the separate cookie jar that is used for PB mode. That would explain that you do not need to log in again, but that Firefox sends the cookies that make the website recognize you. The for PB mode used cookie jar is only purged from memory when you close all PB mode tabs and windows.
