Suddenly this morning I could no longer open the Firefox program which I have used on this Dell PC (Windows 7) for at least two years. I have tried uninstalling and re-installing all Firefox components and have spent hours today on Google trying to troubleshoot the problem. I am very frustrated about this and about the fact that there is no telephone support for Firefox.

Some problems occurs when your Internet security program was set to trust the previous version of Firefox, but no longer recognizes your updated version as trusted. Now how to fix the problem: To allow Firefox to connect to the Internet again;

  • Make sure your Internet security software is up-to-date (i.e. you are running the latest version).
  • Remove Firefox from your program's list of trusted or recognized programs. For detailed instructions, see

Configure firewalls so that Firefox can access the Internet. {web link}

I am using ESET Security as my firewall and have posted a query to their support team to figure out how to do this. Any ideas???

Open the firewall program. Find the page of allowed programs. Remove everything so the firewall will redo all programs.

I am able to open and fully access Firefox when I launch Windows 7 in safe mode. That would suggest that is is not a firewall issue. Do you have any other ideas? Thanks for your help!

I am able to open and fully access Firefox when I launch Windows 7 in safe mode.

Windows Safe Mode only runs system files, nothing else.

I disabled my ESET virus protection and firewall but Firefox still did not open. Any other ideas? I noticed that I had a Windows upgrade yesterday at 9:30 AM and around that time I began having the problems with Firefox. Does this provide any clues or just a red herring?

Most of the time, this type of issue is caused by the firewall, or one of your protection programs. Disable one, then another until the problem is gone.

I have disabled ESET Security, Windows Firewall and Windows Defender but Firefox still does not open.

Tried to do a SYstem Restore and received this message: System Restore failed to extract the file C:\programfilesx86\mozillafirefox\browser\components\browsercomps.dll from the restore point. The restore point was damaged or was deleted during the restore. Does this help at all with understanding the issue?

hi raplot, this might be a recent issue for firefox users on dell devices caused by a update to the dell protected workspace software that got preinstalled on their devices this week. in the meantime dell has apparently provided an update that should fix this firefox startup crash. can you try to exit and relauch the dell protected workspace program (though its icon in the windows taskbar) - this should trigger another update, and report back if this worked? thank you!
